Crowns & Bridgework

Dental Crowns and Bridgework.

At the office of Dr. Richard Goldberg, we provide a wide range of general and cosmetic dentistry treatments to the residents of Monroe Township and the surrounding New Jersey areas. Whether it’s general dentistry that you need to help care for your family’s oral health or a Spotswood cosmetic dentist for teeth whitening, we have all the dental services your family needs under one roof!

For our patients with damaged and missing teeth, we offer state-of-the-art crowns and bridges which are treatments designed to restore smiles and mimic the natural function of the teeth.

What is a Crown?

A dental crown is a covering that is placed over a damaged tooth to improve the tooth’s strength, shape, appearance, and function. While there are several types of crowns, porcelain tooth-colored crowns are the most popular due to them being very durable, long-lasting, and natural looking. Dr. Goldberg uses crowns to:

  • Strengthen & improve the appearance and size of teeth that have been treated with root canals
  • Restore broken or cracked teeth
  • Cover misshapen teeth
  • Hold bridgework or partial dentures in place

The Dental Crown Procedure

Dental Crowns - Step by Step.

When you visit us for a dental crown in Monroe Township, Dr. Goldberg will first evaluate your dental health to determine if you can be treated with a less invasive procedure. Once he decides that a dental crown is necessary, the tooth will be prepared to receive the crown. This typically involves reducing the tooth structure to make room for the crown and then reshaping the tooth and taking an impression of it. The impression will then be sent to an off-site lab for the fabrication of your custom-made crown.

You can leave our office once Dr. Goldberg places a temporary crown over the tooth while we wait for your crown to be made. When the new permanent crown arrives at our office, you’ll be asked to come back in so Dr. Goldberg can cement the crown into place. Once the crown is securely in place, he will check it for fit, color, and aesthetics to ensure proper dental health and function.

What is a Bridge?

In addition to restoring damaged teeth, dental crowns can also be used to create a very natural looking replacement for a missing tooth. This is done with bridgework, which spans or ‘bridges’ the space of the missing tooth and requires at least three crowns.

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance. There are several types of bridges with the most popular being the traditional bridge. This type of bridge is typically made of porcelain fused to metal. It consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth to bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

Dental Bridgework - Step by Step. Dr. Goldberg uses bridges to:
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
  • Restore chewing ability and improve the ability to speak clearly
  • Maintain facial shape
  • Restore smiles by upgrading partial dentures

The Bridge Procedure

Getting a bridge is a multi-step process that takes more than one visit with your Spotswood cosmetic dentist. To begin the procedure, Dr. Goldberg will numb the area and then prepare the two anchoring teeth by removing a portion of the enamel to allow for a crown. Next, an impression is taken which will be sent to an off-site lab where the custom-made bridge will be fabricated. Before you leave our office, a temporary bridge will be made and secured into place to fill the empty space.

When the new permanent bridge arrives at our office, we will have you come back in so it can be placed in your mouth. Once placed, the bridge will be checked carefully by Dr. Goldberg to ensure it doesn’t interfere with your bite alignment.

How to Care for Your Crowns & Bridgework

Just like your natural teeth, crowns and bridges need to be brushed and flossed daily to remove the buildup of dental plaque. You should also visit us regularly for routine oral exams and cleanings so you can maintain good oral health. To avoid damaging your crowns and bridges, you should never use your teeth as tools. If you have a habit of grinding your teeth, we suggest wearing a nightguard to protect the investment you made in your smile. When cared for properly, your crowns and bridges can last for many long years.
