At the office of Dr. Richard Goldberg, not only to we provide dental care to patients of all ages, we also want to educate our patients to ensure they maintain optimal oral health. Lately, you may have noticed the recent trend of charcoal teeth whitening, which has been blowing up social media channels and the internet in general. It involves brushing teeth with activated charcoal to remove stains for a whiter and brighter smile. There are scores of videos online that show people brushing their teeth using charcoal and telling viewers that this method works wonders.

The idea behind using charcoal to whiten teeth stems from charcoal’s absorbent properties. Charcoal is commonly used in hospitals to treat poisoning victims because it can quickly bind to, absorb and remove poison from the body. Therefore, charcoal has the same potential to absorb toxins and stains from teeth to make them whiter.

Charcoal Can Damage Tooth Enamel

In spite of the popularity of using charcoal to whiten teeth, there simply hasn’t been enough research done to determine its safety and effectiveness. Many dental professionals believe that the abrasiveness of charcoal can scrub away the protective enamel on teeth to lead to what’s called enamel erosion. As the charcoal works its way into the inner layer of teeth (dentin), which is a yellowish color, the teeth may eventually end up looking yellow or stained, making the whole process counterproductive.

A spokesperson for the American Dental Association (ADA) recently stated that the organization has not yet evaluated or accepted any charcoal teeth whitening products. We don’t recommend using activated charcoal to whiten teeth as it may do more harm than good.
