When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dental implants are considered the standard of excellence by which other tooth replacement options are judged. A dental implant is more natural looking, longer-lasting and more stable than other tooth replacement options. To help you better understand this procedure used to replace missing teeth, our practice has answered some of the most commonly asked questions about dental implants.

Q: What is a Dental Implant?

A: A dental implant is a small screw-like post made of titanium that is designed to replace a missing tooth root. (See Example) It is surgically inserted into the jawbone in a procedure that takes place in our office. Once the implant has been put into place, a healing process occurs that may last for several months Then a life-like crown is placed on top of the implant to complete the procedure.

Q: Can People with More Than One Missing Tooth Have Implants Placed?

A: Yes. Dental implants can be used to replace one, several or all the teeth. (See Example) Implants can also be used to support other tooth replacement options like removable dentures or bridges.

Q: Does It Hurt to Undergo a Dental Implant Procedure?

A: For most patients, the dental implant procedure is simple and tolerable. As with many other types of dental treatments, there is some post-procedural discomfort. To help alleviate this discomfort, we recommend taking a regular anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen.

Q: Are Dental Implants More Costly Than Other Tooth Replacement Options?

A: Initially, dental implants do cost more than other tooth-replacement options such as dentures or bridgework. But since dental implants are very long-lasting, they are the most cost-effective option in the long run. Q: Can a Dental Implant Be Rejected by My Body?

A: The vast majority of dental implants are successful. In fact, the success rate for dental implants exceeds 95%. That being said, dental implants cannot be rejected by the body because they do not contain any living cells or genetically coded material.
