The Dental Implants Procedure

A dental implant most often takes the form of a small, screw-shaped titanium post that replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. The surgical procedure only requires anesthesia in many cases, in order to provide our patients with the highest level of comfort possible. After a healing period, the implant is topped with a lifelike crown, custom-made to match your existing natural teeth. After a more serious procedure, a dental implant is inserted directly into the jawbone and left to heal for a few months before the crown is attached.

Types Of Implants

There are different procedures for the varying degrees of cases. The three most common procedures include:

Dental Implants Replace One Tooth.Single Tooth Implants: To replace one tooth, a single implant is inserted into the bone to replace the root part of that tooth; a crown then goes on top to simulate an actual tooth.

Dental Implants Replace Multiple Teeth.Multiple Tooth Implants: For example, if you are missing three teeth in a row, we can place two implants, one on either side of the gap, and a crown in between. That way, you won't need to use any of your remaining natural teeth as bridge supports, which could weaken them and make them more susceptible to decay.

Dental Implants Replace All Teeth.Full Mouth Dental Implants: Implants can also support an entire arch of upper or lower replacement teeth. An entire arch of teeth can be replaced with only 4 implants that hold the bridgework. However, certain cases of extreme deterioration may require up to 5 or 6 implants to support a row of 10 to 12 teeth.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implant replacement teeth have extremely high success rates, as long as you take proactive steps to care for them. They’re an excellent long-term investment for your oral and overall health, whether you need single or full mouth implants. Even if the initial cost is slightly higher than other options, it is the most cost-effective solution over time.

Implant Care and Maintenance

There are only two ways an implant can lose attachment once it has successfully fused: poor oral hygiene or excessive biting forces. To protect your implants, you should:

  • Brush and floss your teeth daily, and visit the dentist for routine checkups and cleanings.
  • Avoid clenching or grinding your teeth, as implants are unable to handle these forces.
  • If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, a night guard may be recommended to protect your implants.
